With Plaquenil, the possibility of permanent vision damage scares me. I also want to be sure that I'm taking a drug that will slow/stop the progression of the disease. I've read elsewhere that Plaquenil is not as strong/effective in the treatment of early RA. With Methotrexate, the reports of nausea and possible liver damage are concerning. The exact cause of polymorphous light eruption isn't well-understood. The rash appears in people who have developed sensitivity to components of sunlight, and in particular ultraviolet UV radiation from the sun or other sources, such as tanning beds or tanning lamps. This sensitivity is called photosensitivity. Polymorphous light eruption PMLE usually resolves on its own within a week or two. Since sun rashes will normally heal if sun exposure is avoided, further treatment may not be necessary. Know more about PMLE treatment and skin rashes from sunlight.

  5. Hi I dont have Lupus but am being tested for it, but I have started taking Plaquenil for my sun allergy PMLE. My consultant said I'd know right away if they work, and they do, but after only 6 pills, my stomach feels awful, and I have nausea on and off.

I have a question for anyone taking Plaquenil Hydroxychloroquine. I have been taking it for 7 months now. I just started going to the pool this summer, and every time I do I tan more than I ever have in my life. Hydroxychloroquine HCQ, sold under the brand name Plaquenil among others, is a medication used for the prevention and treatment of certain types of malaria. Specifically it is used for chloroquine-sensitive malaria. Other uses include treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and porphyria cutanea tarda. It is taken by mouth. With Plaquenil, however, the most commonly prescribed anti-malarial, this sort of damage occurs only in 1 out of 5,000 people who take the drug for five years or more. For this reason though, it is important that you see an ophthalmologist for an exam before starting to take an anti-malarial medication for your lupus.
