    Chloroquine is an aminoquinoline that is quinoline which is substituted at position 4 by a 5-diethylaminopentan-2-ylamino group at at position 7 by chlorine. It is used for the treatment of malaria, hepatic amoebiasis, lupus erythematosus, light-sensitive skin eruptions, and rheumatoid arthritis. An antimalarial agent used for the treatment and suppression of Plasmodium vivax, P. malariae, and P. falciparum; available in phosphate and sulfate forms. It does not produce a radical cure because it has no effect on the exoerythrocytic stages; chloroquine-resistant strains of P. falciparum have developed in Southeast Asia, Africa. Chloroquine resistance is widespread in P. falciparum and is reported in P. vivax. Before using Chloroquine for prophylaxis, it should be ascertained whether Chloroquine is appropriate for use in the region to be visited by the traveler.
