    I thought it was a sulfa drug or at least in the same class. I would have thought that the "sulfate" in the name would be a give away?

    These are not sulfates. Sulfate used after a drug name is just the last name of the chemical, its the sulfate salt. It has nothing to do with sulfonamides. Allergy to sulfonamide antibiotics has no relationship to allergies to hydroxychloroquine. Back in April i started to take the Brand Plaquenil because I am allergic to Sulfa. I had read that it was better to take the Brand if you were allergic to Sulfa. And thank goodness, I have done well with it so far. I was started on a small dose, 1\2 tablet a day, but now the Rheumie wants me to take 400 mg a day. How to use Plaquenil Hydroxychloroquine is usually taken with food or milk to prevent stomach upset. The dosage and length of treatment are based on your medical condition and response to therapy.
