    Plaquenil retinal toxicity symptoms

Suddenly I'm experiencing eye problems (blilnd spots). I have stopped taking plaquenil, but now I'm being told by doctors that the damage is not necessarily reversible especially if you have taken it for a long time.

Although it is considered rare, retinal toxicity from the intake of Plaquenil can be irreversible even if the drug is discontinued 2, 3. What is Plaquenil Toxicity? The toxicity resulting from the intake of Plaquenil is due to its affinity for melanin-containing structures in the body. Research has shown that your risk of developing retinopathy is higher the longer you are taking Plaquenil. In fact, the incidence of retinal toxicity rises sharply in people that have taken it between 5 and 7 years. As a result, baseline testing should occur within the first year of taking the drug and then annually at the five-year mark. Feb 19, 2020 Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is an antimalarial medication used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites, which enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Plaquenil is also used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus.

My mother was diagnosed with Plaquenil Toxicity in 2007 she first noticed changes in 2006, although being followed by her eye doctor they failed to notice this as Plaquenil TX until it was to late. I'm hoping to find people who have recovered from the eye damage.

With Plaquenil related toxicity, the pigment in the macula can change and alter vision by producing blurring and distortion of objects. These changes, if they are going to occur, happen slowly over a long period of time. Your eye care provider can examine the macula and detect subtle changes before you begin to notice any symptoms of problems. Nov 01, 2007 If signs of toxicity develop, the internist or rheumatologist should be consulted to determine if the medication can be discontinued. Toxicity may progress even after the medication has been discontinued. 15. Figure 2a. Once retinal toxicity from hydroxychloroquine occurs, it is thought that the retinal changes are permanent and the disease can progress even if hydroxychloroquine is stopped for 1 to 3 years. Newer techniques for evaluation of retinal disease have been developed and these techniques can detect retinal toxicity earlier.
