Please review the following URL and make sure that it is spelled correctly. An ANA test is a blood test that screens for anti-nuclear antibodies, or antibodies against DNA, which is the genetic material within the nucleus of every cell.

I had almost every symptom of systemic lupus but the Doctors argued that I could not have lupus with a negative ANA. One day I decided to attend a lupus support group and listening to the members, I was convinced I had lupus. I finally had the correct diagnosis and was put on Plaquenil which, after about six months had me feeling much. Yes, the ANA levels can fluctuate and even be negative. A negative ANA doesn't rule out lupus, nor does a positive ANA confirm lupus. I know that sound contridictory, but a lupus dx comes from the symptoms. An elevated ANA is one of the 11 criteria for a lupus dx. But Plaquenil could help someone ANA-negative for a few reasons that I've read about. First, maybe you do have positive ANA & positive autoantibodies, but all your bloodwork was done when those levels had fallen. Then there's that rare kind of SLE called Ro-lupus. Also, in the discoid lupus "subset", people remain ANA-negative.

People without SLE or another autoimmune disease usually have a low ANA titer, while a person with SLE will have a high one. This test is carried out using one of two assays, and the results are recorded as an antibody titer, which indicates the concentration of anti-nuclear antibodies in the bloodstream.

Positive ANA Turned Negative. April 26, 2007 By Arthritis Center. Question. For several years I have had recurrent unexplainable illnesses, rashes and arthritis-like symptoms. Finally during my last episode, I requested an ANA test, which returned positive. My doctor and I both felt like we were finally getting to the bottom of things and he. ANA-Negative Lupus. In simplest terms, ANA-negative lupus is a condition in which a person’s ANA—or antinuclear antibody—test comes back negative, but the person exhibits traits consistent with someone diagnosed with lupus. The ANA test is used to screen for lupus, not diagnose it. These tests are crazy, right? You really do not have negative lupus tests. Only your ANA is negative. Your complement is low — must be characteristic of lupus specifically because my normal complement biases my doctor against lupus — and you have anti dsdna. These tests are diagnostic.
