Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine belongs to a group of medicines called quinolines. Plaquenil is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia. Antimalarial quinolines are used to prevent and treat malaria. During the blood stages of the life cycle of malaria parasite the parasite needs to degrade hemoglobin. Hemoglobin digestion releases free heme that is toxic to the parasite, so it is then polymerised to non toxic hemozoin. Cross‐reactivity between quinolones in uncertain. Recently, we studied three patients who had developed suspected allergic reaction to a quinolone. For all of them we performed skin test, histamine release test, RAST, and oral provocation with the suspected quinolone and also with another quinolone of the opposite generation.

Retinopathy may be asymptomatic or may cause central or paracentral scotomas leading to difficulty reading or performing fine visual tasks (due to parafoveal metamorphopsia). If you are taking Plaquenil to treat an inflammatory condition or malaria, you should be aware of the side effects that may occur to your eyes and vision. Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is in a class of drugs called disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, which are used to decrease inflammation, pain and joint damage. Appropriate studies performed to date have not demonstrated geriatric-specific problems that would limit the usefulness of hydroxychloroquine in the elderly. However, elderly patients are more likely to have age-related kidney problems, which may require caution and an adjustment in the dose for patients receiving this medicine. Breastfeeding
